#Oscar 2020: Africa fails to make the cut (Full list of nominees)

Nominations for 92nd Academy Awards have been announced.

Interestingly, no African movie was nominated for the ‘Best International Feature Film category’ this year.

Genevieve Nnaji’s ‘Lion Heart’, which was tipped to be Nigeria’s Oscar entry, did not make the cut. No movie also made from South Africa, an Oscar favourite.

‘Parasite’, made history by becoming the first Korean film ever to earn a best picture nomination. In all, the film scored six Oscar nominations.

It also became the first Korean film to ever land a nomination in the international feature category (which was known as foreign language film prior to this year).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced a change in title for the Best Foreign Language Film to what is now known as the Best International Feature Film,

The dark comic drama ‘Joker’ leads the nominee list with 11 nods.

Other strong contenders are “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Joker,” “Little Women,” “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” “Marriage Story,” “Parasite” and “1917”.

All 10 movies are vying for best picture this year.

The ceremony is billed to be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 9.

On January 9, 2020, ABC Entertainment president, Karey Burke, revealed that the ceremony would once again forego a host, necessitated by the withdrawal of originally announced host Kevin Hart.
